Caucus Groups
Governance of the ETI
A key component of ETI’s governance structure are the membership caucus groups. Each caucus represents a group of members with a common interest in relation to ETI’s work. Given the diversity of membership, it is recognised that each of these caucus groups may have quite different priorities and interests, each of which need to be represented in ETI’s policies and activities.
We have four caucus groups:
- Trade union caucus: all four of our member trade union
organisations, together with representatives from selected affiliates
involved in ETI work, participate in this caucus group.
- NGO caucus: this comprises all our NGO member organisations.
- Food Group: this group comprises all of our member
companies involved in the retail and/or supply of food products.
- General Merchandise (GM) Group: this group comprises all of our member companies involved in the retail and/or supply of general merchandise (non-food) products.
Note: Some member companies sell or supply both food and general merchandise products. These companies may sit on both the Food Group and the General Merchandise Group.
The roles of the caucus groups are to:
- Develop joint policies and priorities on ETI-related issues, and ensure that these are communicated and represented at the ETI Board and in ETI projects and activities. This may be pro-active (raising an issue of common concern, such as the lack of available advice on worker education, and lobbying the ETI Board and Secretariat to address this concern), or re-active (eg, responding to a request from the Secretariat to determine key priorities for the ETI conference);
- Share experience, information and views on ETI-related issues and activities.
- Elect and support representatives on ETI project groups.
Each caucus groups meets approximately four times a year, usually immediately before the quarterly Board meetings.
