Help using the ETI Website

A quick look at this page will help you to get more out of this site (and possibly some others too!)

How our site is organised and why

Our website has been completely redesigned after extensive consultation with ETI members and other users. At its core is the "ETI Library" in which are documents which, once posted, form a permanent archive. This includes almost all publications posted on previous versions of the site. This is organised with a variety of indexes which, together with key pages of the Resources section, give you various ways of finding the information you need.

Other sections of the site comprise pages about ETI and its activities, and are less 'persistent' - i.e. we shall update them as necessary, rather than archiving them and writing a whole new one, as we might with a report.

In general, links that take you across to the 'top-level' entry page of a different section will be highlighted with the appropriate coloured background (if your browser supports this feature).

You can get a feel for the structure of the site by either browsing the drop-down menus at the top (wave your mouse over them without clicking!) or visiting the Site Map.

Alternative site views

Standard / simple views, and the drop-down menus

Note: at present, changing between simple and standard site views always takes you back to the Home Page. (We are working on an alternative mechanism that will change the view while keeping you on the same page.)

The standard site view shows the Milonic drop-down menus at the top of the page. While these are pretty reliable on newer browsers, they can sometimes fail, or at least slow things down quite a lot on older computers/browsers. If you are having problems, you can switch to a simpler site view (which disables these menus) by clicking on the link at the very bottom of every page. You should still be a ble to find your way around quickly and easily using links on the page - in particular, note that at the foot of every page are two 'stripes' of links, first to key pages within the current section, and then to the 'top-level' entry pages of each site section.

(Both sites actually access the same text, so you can be confident that you are not missing anything on the simpler site. In future, there will be other differences, for example the exclusion of any very large images from the simpler view.)

Milonic DHTML menusMany thanks to Milonic Ltd for the licenses for use of the menus on both public and member sites. An upgrade is in course to the latest version (v5), which is faster and still more widely browser compatible.

Reading PDF documents

Some documents have been posted to this website as PDF (Portable Document Format) files. This format is usually used either because the document is placed here 'for the record', or because elements of the document layout are important and difficult/expensive to replicate on an ordinary webpage.

There are many PDF readers out there, and operating systems such as Mac OS X and Linux generally incorporate a reader as standard. However, under some other older or less well-equipped operating systems, you will have to install one. The most commonly used is Adobe's Acrobat Reader. This is FREE and is available on the cover CDs supplied with most computer magazines. It may also be downloaded from the Adobe website by clicking on this icon:

Note that, especially if you are on a network, you may have to ask your system administrator to install this software for you!

Reading Chinese Documents

Operating systems such as Mac OS X and Linux generally incorporate this kind of functionality as standard, but to do this on Microsoft Windows, you may need to download the appropriate fonts/upgrades. There lots of instructions and a number of download sites on the web, but they don't all work very well and are so platform-specific that we have decided not to reproduce any instructions here, as they could simply add to the confusion. The best solution is to find and follow instructions appropriate to your operating system version and browser version.

Good luck!
