Update on multi-stakeholder organisations project
11th June 2003
On 21st May 2003, the Ethical Trading Initiative (ETI) hosted the second meeting between six multi-stakeholder organisations. Following the previous meeting in February the organisations met to discuss further the joint trial project to explore the possibility of working collaboratively to test and identify best practice in implementing corporate codes of conduct. The project will focus on the garment sector in a particular country (as yet to be decided) and is expected to run for a 3-4 year period.
The meeting agreed the composition of the Steering Committee, which will consist of one representative from each organisation. The Steering Committee appointed an Independent Chair for the duration of the project. For the purposes of the project the six organisations agreed to work from a common code that encompasses the most rigorous elements of each of the organisation’s codes. Other areas discussed included:
- roles for local Advisory Groups – to be agreed in consultation with local partners
- locations for the project – three countries are currently being considered
- staffing – two staff members will be recruited in due course
- funding – donors are currently being explored and proposals will be submitted in the next 2-3 months
- government and ILO involvement
- transparency and communications
The next meeting will take place on Wednesday 6th August hosted by Social Accountability International in New York.
