“If being an active member of ETI has taught us one thing, it is the value of looking beyond our own supply chains and working with NGOs and trade union organisations – they can provide specialised knowledge and skills that neither we nor our suppliers have.”

annual report 2002/2003 — harnessing difference
achievements/sharing good practice

flagship publications

Two major publications issued this year have encapsulated our learning and made it available to all. Crucially, the publications offer practical guidance and protocols so that key audiences are equipped with working tools with which to implement labour codes.

Inspecting labour practices in South Africa

Inspecting labour practice in the wine industry of the Western Cape, South Africa 1998 - 2002 is a frank record of the development of one of our first experimental projects. The report outlines the lessons learnt about how to establish multi-stakeholder partnerships, presents in detail the inspection protocols developed by the project, and describes some of the labour issues it identified and addressed.

Who is it for?

This report provides practical information, insights and inspiration for retailers, sourcing companies, suppliers, code initiatives, auditors and others who need to know how to inspect labour practices in any challenging environment.

What's in the report?

A wide-ranging review, this study shows the value of meticulous groundwork, building relationships and testing methodologies alongside partners with local insight and knowledge. The methodologies and protocols developed are published in detail. The report acknowledges the multiplicity of challenges but also spells out the project's benefits, from enhanced conditions for workers to the setting up of WIETA, an initiative that builds on the momentum we gained (see page 15).

ETI workbook

Last year, we launched the ETI workbook as a members’ resource. This year, we substantially updated the manual and published it as a public resource. The ETI workbook is an ethical trading toolkit for sourcing companies, based on ETI’s experiences and learning to date. Presented as step-by-step guidance, it covers the key management issues that companies need to address when setting up and implementing an ethical sourcing strategy.

Who is it for?

The workbook has been written specifically for retailers and sourcing companies who have made a commitment to ethical trade, but are seeking guidance on how to implement their ethical sourcing policy or code of labour practice. However, it will also be useful for other organisations and individuals such as consultancy firms who advise companies on ethical sourcing.

What's in the workbook?
