Introduction
This page highlights some additional free resources which provide detailed information on labour law and practice and related issues in Vietnam. For further information see generic resources on Vietnam - see quicklinks box.

and footwear).
The ETI code of labour practice: do workers really benefit? Findings and recommendations from a case study in Vietnam (garments and footwear) reports on the findings of one of five in-depth case studies carried out as part of the ETI Impact Assessment study, which was conducted by the Institute of Development Studies (University of Sussex) 2006. The report includes:
- Relevant background information on the Vietnam garment and footwear sectors, including labour legislation
- A description of key labour problems found against each of the 9 Base Code principles
- An account of the impacts of codes in these sectors, including impacts
on each of the 9 ETI Base Code principles and on different types of workers.
2. Southeast Asia Research Centre (SEARC): Database of Labour Law
SEARC, part of the City University of Hong Kong, conducts applied research in economic and political development, including research on labour practices and trade in China and South East Asia. Their website features a Database of Labour Law which provides comprehensive information on labour law and practice in Vietnam (and also Cambodia, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand).
For each country, you can find information on the following topics:
- the politico-legal framework
- labour force structure (including by sector)
- the employment/labour contract and coverage by labour laws and regulations: this section is particularly relevant to the ETI Base Code, as it provides detailed coverage of law and practice in relation to contracts and dismissal procedures, discrimination, wages and working hours, as well as an overview of ratification of international conventions and the different types of employment contracts.
- Collective employment provisions, including legal status of unions, union formation and membership etc.
- Conflicts, disputes and settlements, and
- Inspections, monitoring and health and safety: this section includes an overview of labour law and practice in relation to occupational health and safety, as well as information on the rights and duties of the labour inspectorate.

3. Asian Labour News
This is an online database of news about workers in Southeast Asia and China and the issues that affect them.
How do I get hold of a copy? See www.asianlabour.org.
There is a search facility that allows you to search by country and/or issue.
4. CSR Asia Weekly
CSR Asia Weekly is a free publication published by CSR Asia that provides a weekly roundup of CSR news and events in the Asia-Pacific week, along with a number of special articles that examine current issues in more depth. It draws on specialists from the region who work on the ground in environment, labour and CSR. Topics covered include: child labour, corruption, governance, environment, human rights, labour law, health, occupational health & safety, poverty, migrant workers, reporting, supply chains, sustainable development, trade and wages.

5. CSR Asia Website
CSR Asia (see 3 above) also manage a website, which provides short summaries of CSR news stories’ from a wide range of international newspapers, often with commentary from researchers at the University of Hong Kong. The site allows browsers to search by country and/or issue eg, Vietnam, trade unions.
