Multi-Fibre Agreement phase-out: Who gains? Who loses?

27th October 2004

The final stage of the phase-out of the MFA on 1 January 2005 is predicted to have significant economic and social consequences, including substantial job losses in some key garment producing countries in the developing world. This ETI seminar was organised to raise awareness and encourage action from ETI members and other EU and US companies.

The MFA Forum, a collection of multilateral and national public institutions, labour and civil society organisations, businesses and multi-stakeholder initiatives, came together in March 2004 to explore the potential for collaborative and coordinated actions in the run-up to and after the end of quotas under the ATC.

Seasonal and foreign labour in the UK food industry

30th April and 15th May 2002

We organised two seminars in Kent and Lincolnshire, two major horticultural regions where the gangmaster system is a well established part of the agricultural labour system. The seminar aimed to raise awareness of the issues around foreign and seasonal labour employed through gangmasters, and to provide suppliers with practical advice on how to identify and address exploitation of these workers. Speakers included suppliers, trade union representatives, the Fresh Produce Consortium, employment lawyers and a progressive gangmaster.

This seminar was organised in collaboration with Just Pensions. Aimed at socially responsible investment (SRI) managers, it presented and discussed draft guidelines for investors on incorporating supply chain labour issues into investment decisions.
