December - Bulletin: Food industry alarmed at proposals to water down Gangmaster Act.
Up to 150,000 temporary workers in the food industry stand to fall through a government-created loophole in legislation designed to avoid a repetition of the tragedy of Morecambe Bay.

31 October - New agenda for ethical trade to help bring trade justice for workers.
As trade campaigners prepare for a mass lobby of parliament on international trade rules (2 Nov), the ETI today launches its new agenda for ethical trade, looking at how companies can play their part in promoting trade justice by using their trading relationships with suppliers to protect poor workers around the world.

14 October - Zara owners Inditex join the Ethical Trading Initiative.
Inditex, one of the world’s largest fashion retailers with over 50,000 employees worldwide and 36 stores on UK high streets under the Zara brand, has joined UK-based Ethical Trading Initiative in a move which brings yet another global giant under the auspices of ETI’s Base Code.

29 September - UK supermarkets back initiative to help break cycle of poverty for poor farm workers.
New guidelines on working with smallholders launched in London last week have received the backing of UK supermarkets and major buyers, including Sainsbury’s, Marks & Spencer, Asda, Somerfield, the Co-op and the Ethical Tea Partnership.

22 September - ETI Director calls for industry-wide action to help poor farm workers reap benefits of global trade.
Ethical Trading Initiative (ETI) members including Marks & Spencer, Sainsbury’s, the Ethical Tea Partnership, TGWU and Oxfam launch new food manufacturing and retailing industry-wide guidelines on improving working conditions for workers on smallholding farms: the ETI Smallholders Guidelines: recommendations for working with smallholders.

30 June - Ethical Trading Initiative welcomes key output of Dhaka conference.
Ethical Trading Initiative (ETI) Chair Alan Roberts today (1 July 2005) welcomed the key output of the recent UNDP/MFA Forum conference (see 24 June PR). The conference saw the Bangladesh Ministry of Commerce pledge to work with a wide range of organisations to carry out urgent actions aimed at improving the textile and garment industry’s compliance with national law and with international labour standards.

24 June - Dhaka conference - ETI Chair calls for joint action to protect poorest workers.
ETI members Gap, Asda/George, Marks & Spencer and Levi Strauss will be joined by other leading global retailers and brands including Walmart, the Cotton Group and Karstadt Quelle at a major conference in Dhaka, Bangladesh (Textiles and Garments: Forum on the Future, 27 and 28 June) to discuss the future of the country’s textiles and garments industry in the post-quota period...
