ETI conference 2005 - Shaping a new agenda

C6: Moving production in search of the cheapest deals… is best practice possible?

Critical issues workshop

In the drive to offer ever-lower prices to consumers, many retailers and brands have adopted “footloose” sourcing strategies, frequently shifting production between different countries in pursuit of the cheapest deals – and often this means where labour costs are lowest. But such strategies may seem to sit somewhat uncomfortably with the ethical trading principles that a growing number of companies have adopted. What is the way forward? This workshop provided:

  • an overview of typical sourcing strategies and what they mean for workers
  • case studies of retailer/brand sourcing strategies that meet ethical trading principles
  • an informed debate on the role consumers can play in ensuring a better deal for workers.

BRIEFING PAPERS

Based on presentations and discussions from the conference, this set of briefing papers has been designed to provide practical guidance to brands, retailers, suppliers and others on addressing cutting edge issues in ethical trade, such as resolving difficult non-compliances, improving purchasing practices, and working with trade unions.
