“Suppliers are often sceptical about ethical trade, and unaware of the business benefits of compliance with company codes. It is important to be prepared for resistance and ready to answer the question ‘why should we be doing this?’”

ETI conference 2005 - Shaping a new agenda

C7: Corporate collaboration with trade unions and NGOs in supplier countries

Critical issues workshop

South Africa’s Wine Industry Ethical Trade Association (WIETA) – a locally owned, tripartite labour code initiative in a key sourcing country, might be an ethical trade practitioner’s idea of Utopia. But many recognise that, while establishment of such organisations in key supplier countries might be a long-term goal, individual companies can take smaller steps towards collaboration with trade unions and NGOs in the short to medium term. This session provided participants with an understanding of:

  • How different partners – be they companies, NGOs or trade unions – can benefit from collaboration
  • The challenges to effective collaboration, and how they might be overcome
  • The specific activities, successes and challenges of a range of collaborative initiatives.

BRIEFING PAPERS

Based on presentations and discussions from the conference, this set of briefing papers has been designed to provide practical guidance to brands, retailers, suppliers and others on addressing cutting edge issues in ethical trade, such as resolving difficult non-compliances, improving purchasing practices, and working with trade unions.
