ETI Press Letter
ETI response to Guardian Living Wage article
14 September 2007
Dear Sirs
There’s no doubt that minimum wages levels in some garment producing countries are shockingly low (Guardian September 14 “Top fashion brands accused.”). It should be clear to all that campaigners see progress on the “living wage” as a litmus test to the credibility of a voluntary approach to improving working conditions in global supply chains.
While there’s clear evidence that progress has been made on statutory wage benefits and overtime, the considerable challenge of implementing the living wage is an industry priority. The “Let's Clean Up Fashion” report points out that it is ETI members that have “stepped up a gear”. I urge all fashion companies to join us in a co-ordinated campaign to implement living wages.
