Overview
The Asia Monitor Resource Centre (AMRC) has published a 400 page book, Asia Pacific Labour Law Review 2003, which provides profiles of labour law and how it affects workers in 30 countries in the Asia Pacific region. In addition to a review of labour law as laid down in statutes, it also includes analysis of the effects of labour law on unorganised as well as organised, and informal as well as formal, workers. Contributors are specialists in labour law of the countries in question, and are independent researchers or drawn from trade unions, NGOs, the legal profession or academia.
About AMRC
Based in Hong Kong, the Asia Monitor Resource Centre (AMRC) is an independent non-governmental organisation which focuses on Asian and Pacific labour concerns. The Centre provides information, research, publishing, training, labour networking and related services to trade unions, pro-labour groups and other relevant NGOs in the region. AMRC’s main goal is to support democratic and independent labour movements in Asia and the Pacific.
For further information see www.amrc.org.hk.
How information is collected
Each country profile (chapter) of the book is prepared by a labour law specialist in the country in question. Contributors are variously drawn from the trade union sector, the NGO sector, the legal profession or academia; some are independent researchers. A new edition of this book is due for publication in 2006.
Key strengths
- At US$38 for 30 country profiles, it is good value
for money.
- The content of each country profile is relevant to corporate code implementation: Each country profile describes major labour legislation/regulation with respect to workers’ welfare, labour rights, trade union rights, occupational health and safety, gender and discrimination at work. Each chapter also includes an overview of the country’s history and political context, and recent changes in labour law and significant labour-related events.
Less strong on…
- The reports do not systematically cover all aspects
of the ETI Base Code (see above)
- Country profiles vary significantly in terms of the perspective, emphasis and level of detail provided – differences in approach between the individual contributors have not been “edited out”.
