Overview
Business for Social Responsibility (BSR) maintains an on-line database, Labour Law (Labor Rights and Labour Law Information Center), which provides detailed information on labour law in over 60 countries. It allows production of different types of reports, eg, by country, by region, or by code issue. The information contained in the database is verified by labour lawyers.
About BSR
Established in 1992 and based in the US, BSR is a not-for-profit membership organisation which provides CSR information, tools, training and advisory services to both member and non-member companies.
See www.bsr.org for more information about BSR.
How information is collected
BSR staff compile the information from a range of publicly and privately available sources. This information is then reviewed and verified by local labour lawyers employed by or affiliated to the global law firm Baker & McKenzie (www.bakernet.com). Information on each country is updated as and when relevant law is amended.
Key strengths
- It provides detailed information on labour law that is verified by labour lawyers
- It is designed specifically to meet corporate needs:
- Country reports are structured to cover the legal issues relevant to and addressed in corporate codes of conduct – legal structure, company regulations, labour contracts, categories of workers, wages and benefits, working hours, child labour, forced labour, discrimination, harassment, disciplinary procedures, termination of employment, and health and safety
- Country coverage reflects those sourcing countries prioritised by BSR members (although bear in mind that most members are US-based, and many operate in sectors not covered by ETI members).
Less strong on…
- Labour practices/assessment of compliance. The database provides some observations on actual practice on the ground, but this is not systematic and varies between countries. BSR does not provide auditing services, so they do not have an in-house pool of practical, up-to-date country experience on which to draw.
Countries covered
The database includes information on over 60 countries, with detailed county reports available for 35 of these. Selection of coverage was based on those countries prioritised by BSR members, and where Baker & McKenzie have local offices/coverage.
The countries covered by the BSR Labour Law database is shown on our generic table of availability by country/provider. If you have already consulted this, please proceed to the next section (below)...

How much does it cost?
Access to the database is on a subscription basis only. In general you pay to access the whole database, but it is possible to purchase single country reports – contact the BSR Labor Law team (see below) for relevant costs.
