What does this section cover?
This section of our website provides a signposting service to country-specific sources of information about labour law and practice that are highly relevant to the ETI Base Code. It is structured to allow users to search for information by country – so, for example, you can easily find what relevant resources are available on labour law and practice in Romania.
Who is it for?
This section has principally been developed as a tool to help interested retailers, brands and other sourcing companies to implement labour codes more efficiently and effectively.
However, we believe it will also prove useful to auditing bodies, individual consultants, NGOs, trade union organisations, investors and other code initiatives with an interest in understanding, monitoring and/or improving labour practices in global supply chains.
What information does it provide?
The resources signposted in this section cover the following types of information:
- National labour law – we provide links both to actual texts of relevant legislation, and to law summaries and overviews prepared by various bodies.
- Assessment of actual labour conditions in the country in question, and the extent of compliance with Base Code principles and national labour law. Many of the resources we include focus on conditions in key export industries, eg, garments.
- Relevant contextual information – relevant political, economic, social and institutional issues and structures.
Please note that we have focused particularly on resources that:
- Were compiled or updated since 2002
- Are published in English.
How did we select the resources included in this section?
Resources have been included in this section if they meet the following criteria:
- Relevance – they provide information on labour law or practice relevant to the ETI Base Code, ie, country-specific information on law and/or practice regarding forced labour, freedom of association and collective bargaining, worker health and safety, child labour, wages, working hours, discrimination at work, regular employment/contracts and/or harsh and inhumane treatment of workers.
- Accessibility – they provide relevant information in a form that can be easily understood and used by target users of this Website section (in particular sourcing companies).
Please note however that inclusion of, or reference to, an information source or organisation in this section does not imply that:
- ETI in any way endorses that organisation or resource.
- ETI has verified the accuracy of information contained within the resource.
- The information contained within the resource has necessarily been checked or verified by lawyers (unless where specifically stated).
How this section is structured
You can browse this section via two routes:
- Review the list of generic resources. We
have selected nine generic resources – organisations, publications
or databases – that provide relevant information on a wide range
of countries. We feature five resources that are free of charge, and four
resources for which you have to pay.
- Review the list of countries*. Click on a
letter to find the country you are interested in, and see at a glance
which of the 9 generic resources provide a briefing on that country. Then
click on a 'y' to find out more about
that resource provider, and for a link to their website. For some key
sourcing countries, we also include links to additional resources specific
to that country.
Accessibility Note: We have reconstructed this resource to improve access – users of speaking browsers will find these links identified by the "ID" and "HEADER" tags in the table mark-up. In each country's row, a blank cell labelled "none" indicates non-availability, and cells with 'y' links are marked up with cost code and provider. We recognise that this is a very large grid, and welcome feedback on usability.
*Note:
You may also download the
table of countries [PDF, approx 200kb] to print
out, but please use it in conjunction with all the notes on this site,
and check regularly that the version you are using is the latest.
Review and feedback
We will review and update the information resources referenced in this section every six months.
We would welcome any pointers to additional resources relevant for inclusion in this section. Equally, we welcome feedback on the usefulness – or otherwise! – of any of the resources currently included. Please email any feedback to adil@eti.org.uk.
