Introduction

1. Clean Clothes Campaign (CCC) report on rights violations in Turkey and Eastern Europe (Nov 2005, 51 pages)
Full report title: Workers’ Voices: The situation of women in the Eastern European and Turkish garment industries.
This report by the CCC and the Evangelische Akademie Meissen, features profiles of six countries and valuable insight into key issues for garment workers’ rights in the region. In addition to the information on the garment industry regionally and in relation to the European Union trade regime, details on the industry and working conditions faced by workers in Bulgaria, Macedonia, Poland, Serbia, Turkey, Romania and Moldova is presented. The report draws upon interviews with 256 workers from 55 workplaces. A list of brand and retailers sourcing from the region is included.

2. Fair Wear Foundation report on labour law and practice in the Turkish garment industry (2004, 72 pages)
Full report title: Background study on Turkey, Version 2004-I: basic information on labour conditions and social auditing in the Turkish garment industry. July 2004.
This report was prepared for the Multi-Stakeholder Initiatives Project, as part of the background research for the Project’s first pilot on the garment sector on Turkey. It builds on an earlier study (2003) commissioned by the Fair Wear Foundation and conducted by researchers from the University of Marmara (Istanbul) and DISK/TEKSTIL (Turkish Textile Workers’ Union, affiliated to the ITGLWF).
The report provides a comprehensive overview of:
- Turkey’s textile and garment industry
- Labour practices/conditions in the sector
- Applicable labour law, broken down into sub-sections relating to each of the 9 principles of the ETI Base Code
- International and Turkish organisations working on labour issues in the country
- Corporate code/compliance activities and programmes in the Turkish garment sector.

3. SOMO report on Turkey’s position in the global garment industry (2004, 41 pages)
Full report title: Turkey’s position within the global garment industry. Engin Sedat Kaya. SOMO, Amsterdam, 2004.
The report includes a ten-page section on labour law and practice in the industry, focusing on trade union rights, health and safety, and wages. Not as comprehensive or directly relevant as the FWF report, but still useful and includes some additional information, e.g. a table showing actual wage levels in the industry. The author of this report (from TEKSTIL) was also part of the team of researchers preparing the FWF report.

4. PricewaterhouseCoopers (Turkey): guide to individual labour law in Turkey (2004, 18 pages)
Full report title: A guide to individual labour law in Turkey: 2004 edition.
This booklet, prepared by PricewaterhouseCoopers (Turkey), summarises key aspects of the Turkish Individual Labour Law, including provisions on employment contracts, working hours, annual and maternity leave, and termination of employment.
