Radio 4 programme a fitting tribute to Neil Kearney

A Radio 4 programme has highlighted how partnerships between retailers, factories and unions can transform workers' conditions - and is a fitting tribute to one of ethical trade's most tireless champions.

Zara owner Inditex's success in getting a Bangladeshi factory owner to improve conditions for its workers was profiled by Radio 4's In Business last month.

Ready to wear featured extensive comments from Neil Kearney, General Secretary of the International Textile, Garment and Leather Workers' Union (ITGLWF) and ETI Board member.

Neil tragically died on 19 November 2009, hours after being interviewed.

But the programme shows him in his element.

It reminds us of his measured approach to engaging with retailers and brands on ethical trade, his untiring personal commitment to securing decent work for the millions of garment workers his union represents - and his conviction that change is possible.

Asked by presenter Peter Day how he could afford to spend so much time dealing with just with one issue in one factory, Neil replied:

"You have to start someplace. This factory will become an example, and there will be others.

"Every brand and retailer sourcing from Bangladesh should be paying the same attention to these issues.

"But most importantly, governments need to play a leadership role. They need to partner with unions, employers and buyers - the people who can make things change.

"We need a sea change. This requires thinking beyond next week and next month. It requires thinking about the future."
