Migrant Labour: urgent response required
Document Details
Type: Briefings
Subject: Vulnerable workers
Access: Public
Around 95 million people work away from their country of citizenship or birth. There is growing evidence that migrant workers suffer unique abuses and hardship compared to national workers, that both the scale and complexity of the problems they face are far greater than many had previously understood, and that buying companies' ethical trade strategies are yet to have a positive impact on their lives. This paper is based on discussions at ETI's 2008 conference, Ethical trade: the next decade. It summarises the advice and experience shared by companies, trade unions and NGOs on how companies can take concrete steps towards helping tackle the issues faced by these particularly vulnerable workers.
