Banana Link's Paul Lievens gives an assessment of how the pandemic is impacting workers on plantations in Colombia, Ecuador, Costa Rica & Peru.
In this 5 minute video Paul shows some of the protective measures that have been introduced, such as screens between workers in packhouses, and details which Latin American countries' plantation workers are faring best so far. He also talks about the changes in legislation that some countries have introduced and how this is impacting on workers.
The countries, employers and plantations where the best measures have been introduced are those where there is a strong independent union voice for the workers and where that union has engaged in constructive dialogue with employers.
