Integral to responsible purchasing is understanding how your current practices affect suppliers and workers — and using that insight to improve.
In this video: Hilary Murdoch
Hilary introduces two practical tools to support this process: the procurement mapping exercise and the risk assessment tool, both available for download. These tools are designed to help you take key steps in the “process for improving purchasing practices". (link to process in “getting started”)
Map the procurement cycle:
Carry out this activity with a cross-functional team from across your organisation. The goal is to encourage open, honest dialogue between departments and uncover where gaps may exist between policy and practice. This exercise helps highlight what’s working well and where challenges arise. It supports the second step in the process diagram, “Understand current purchasing practices.”
Use the risk assessment tool:
This tool helps you capture insights on current practices, supplier feedback, identified risks, and ideas for action—mapped against each principle of the Common Framework for Responsible Purchasing Practices. It enables you to track and compare these insights, making it easier to spot links between your purchasing decisions and potential human rights risks in your supply chain. This supports the third step in the process diagram, “Assess current purchasing practices.”
